Designer Plus

As a plus size woman there has always been things I’ve wanted to wear but haven’t been able to. The majority of items have come from designer brands. When it comes to the big name, high fashion companies most people think of the high fashion offerings, there has also been a wide range of casual items such as t-shirts, jeans, joggers and even nightwear. When Navabi got in touch with me recently and asked if I would like to select some items, the designer brands to catch my eye had some fab choices.

Levis was one of the first to expand their range and provide plus size options a while back. The jeans are of course their most sought after items but they have some really nice t-shirts and sweaters. When I saw this grey tee with classic red logo I really wanted to try it. You can’t go wrong with something like this as it works with so many items in the wardrobe. An easy item to dress up or down and with a really light and soft fabric. I’m really glad I chose this one.

There isn’t a person around who doesn’t like a good pair jeans. We all like a pair that hugs our curves in the right way, is comfortable, stylish and would work with many items. Ralph Lauren now have plus range, Lauren Ralph Lauren and these Coral-orange jeans are a fantastic pair to own. I have never had a pair of jeans with such a soft-to-the-touch fabric! You can feel that these are fantastic quality the minute you slip them on. They are thick without being rough and would work across any season. A great colour that can compliment any look and would also work dressed up or down.

The thing is, it’s really great to be able to choose some high quality items from huge brand names such as these. For years I wouldn’t even look at the look books for designers because the only items I could consider where the accessories. The novelty of being able to wear some great items like my smaller sisters can is a really nice feeling.

I’ve mentioned many times on this blog that when you are watching your budget you want to pick out items that can be worn with other things in the closet. Everyone needs some cute t-shirts and we all need a good pair of jeans. Check out both of these ranges over at Navabi to see what might work for you. They’ll be some great choices for you.

London Spring

One of the things I love about being born in London is that there is just so much to do. We have some gorgeous parks, historical sights and great architecture to indulge in. I live close to to Hampstead Heath and really enjoy taking walks there when the weather is nice. This particular part of the city has remained the same for so long. Unlike the glass structures and modern fixtures you see everywhere we still see old buildings, red phone boxes and other things that are typically British.

The other day I was taking an afternoon walk around Hampstead on a cooler spring day. I decided that as it was drizzling I would pull on some lighter items and celebrate the spring that way. It’s the time of year when although the sun is out and the weather is hot we still have wet and dreary days. I pulled on these fun pearl jeans from Evans Clothing. My thought was that i’d wear something casual and easy. When it comes to denim you just can’t go wrong!

Along side the jeans I thought I’d pull on this baby blue off the shoulder sweater from Navabi. This top is also available in peachy Apricot but with blue being my favourite colour there really was no choice lol. I thought i’d wear a simple pair of converse sneakers and a white denim jacket to finish things off. One thing London could be famous for is unpredictable weather so at times you have to be prepared for all eventualities.

The funny thing is I have lived in London my entire life and some things never get old! Since the rise of mobile phone usage you pretty much would never see a phone box anywhere but the traditional red ones have been left in place. Some of them have random plants and things placed inside. This one I stumbled across still worked which is a rare thing to see in the city!

London is my home town. I was born here and have never lived anywhere else. So many people come to my city and fall in love with the place. When you grow up somewhere like this it’s easy to overlook the gorgeous architecture, history and splendour. Such a diverse place to live bursting with life and madness lol. With the run up to the Royal wedding one can’t help but be surrounded by all things British and enjoy it!

Today I Choose Joy

A plus size woman smiling wearing a baby pink trench coat, black skinny jeans, Celine Audrey sunglasses, black boots and silver faux leather backpack

It’s funny, sometimes the energy you put out there can really start a new topic of discussion. I have had countless people contact me recently all speaking on the positivity I display. Many people find it to be refreshing and others have asked me ‘Mayah what makes you so happy?’ In all honesty, I choose to be happy. The more time I spend navigating this world the more I see that joy and happiness are things that don’t happen to you. These are things that you grab by the hands and take for yourself.

My story is one full of roller coaster situations with twists and turns. My childhood and teen years saw me go through quite traumatic bullying. As a result, I ended up making poor choices, entering bad relationships and not taking care of myself. I had to reach a place where it was important for me to “check myself”. I guess you could say I learned that in order to get to a place of joy I had to start with myself…

Several years ago my life led me to a place where I took my relationship with God to a deeper place and I decided to get baptised. I had been contemplating doing so for a while but I guess all things happen in the correct timing. People of faith often speak on joy as though it’s something only reserved for believers. I don’t agree with that statement. I think we all have a right to happiness, light and love but I do know from personal experience that we have to make it happen. People tend to fall into the trap of thinking that one day they will wake up and everything in their life will be perfect. The thing is this; if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got! I think a paradigm shift and taking the steps to make things happen is the key.

I decided to start enjoying how I look, surrounding myself with like minded and positive people among other things. Talking about what I wanted in life was a pointless exercise. Deciding to just get on with things and focus on what makes me happy and what I’m good at made the difference. The easy thing is to focus on the things we’re bad at. That weight we’ve gained, our singleness, lack of money we have… I could go on really. My point is that we spend too much time and energy thinking about what’s wrong with our situations. When you switch your thought patterns to focus on the positive everything changes. You’ll be surprised at how happy you actually are! Don’t get me wrong you may not be where you want to be but, you will have made some strides forward!

When I saw this slogan t-shirt from Zizzi at Navabi I knew I had to have it. This one phrase describes my current state of mind and place in life. ‘TODAY I CHOOSE JOY!’ In other words, I’m making the choice to be happy. I like everyone else have my bad days but I thought i’m gonna make a statement by wearing the words and not just a smile! When putting this look together I wanted to pair the grey tee with a simple pair of black jeans. I selected my supper skinny stretch jeans from Lane Bryant. Yours Clothing recently sent me these fab ankle boots so they were an easy inclusion.

Finishing things off I decided to add a touch of freshness with this baby pink trench coat from Evans. I thought it would be cool to wear some accessories. Hanna let me borrow her Celine Audrey sunglasses for some added glam. Tobi recently sent me some fun new things which I wanted to include with this look. I’m pretty sure that by now when people think of my style hoop earrings come to mind. With that being said you can see why I wanted this pair of in the loop hoops! Adding more silver I selected the faux leather backpack.

Aside from what i’m wearing, ultimately the key is to do the things that make you happy. It might the clothes you wear that make you smile, the people you’re with or what you do.

Plus+ By Bethany Rutter

A plus size woman smiling wearing a pink gingham ruffle shirt, white tutu, hot pink beret and pink ballerina shoes

When it comes to the Plus size community we have really made some huge strides over the past few years. We now have a wide variety of fashion brands on the market to cater to all of our different styles. Women all over the place are able to move and stride with an air of confidence and generally speaking we are more appreciated for what we have to offer and how we look. The standards of beauty continue to remain pretty much the same though, so when big things happen in our community we celebrate them! One of my fellow blogging sisters Bethany Rutter not only launched a fab collection with Navabi last year. We now have the most amazing little coffee table book ‘Plus+’.

Plus+ By Bethany Rutter

I was extremely honoured and flattered to have been asked to be a part of this book. Bethany has banded together a series of fabulous women from all over the world to highlight their fashion and beauty. Plus+ features women of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds across a varied age demographic. Each woman has their own style and their own way of expressing themselves. It’s great to be able to see so many different looks and styles. If you get hold of this one you will see a little something for everyone. Edgy street fashion, vintage classics, abstract looks, elegant, classy, casual and sophisticated fashion. Each woman has a quote about her style so you get a glimpse of everyone’s personalities too.

The cover art features American fashion blogger and designer Gabi Fresh and the foreword is penned by the ever celebrated Nicolette Mason. Bethany of course speaks about what inspired this book and how it was put together. I guess for me just knowing that a book like this is available gives me reason to smile. If you had asked me a few years ago if this sort of thing was possible I would have laughed in your face! I remember a time when plus size women were scoffed at and our fashion choices and were limited to what I call granny chic! We had nothing but butterfly prints and shapeless sacks to dress ourselves in. Being part of something celebrating us bigger women as sexy, trendy and stylish means more than you could possibly know! Hats off to Bethany for making it happen!
