Poppies In The Sunshine

It’s hard when you love the summertime, have a wardrobe stacked full of clothes perfect for the season and you live in a country where sunny days can be few and far between. I remember it wasn’t so long ago when the seasons fell on the months they were assigned and, we were able to clearly identify just from the time of year what plans we should make and what clothes we should wear at the same time. I now have a mix of winter and summer clothes accessible in my wardrobe and more often than not i’m having to still pull on a jacket of some sort.

Last year we saw the introduction of vintage brand that was created specifically for us plus size women. Lady Voluptuous was brought to us by the well known British brand, Lady Vintage. They teamed up with the gorgeous Georgina Cox from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust and brought us a fun, vibrant and exciting clothing line. The brand has gone from strength to strength and have since expanded, bringing us bridal options and a plethora of new designs. When the collection first launched there was one dress in particular that I really wanted to get my hands on! The orange poppy print dress! Now I cannot begin to tell you the hell I had in trying to get this one! I purchased one of the last dresses in my size and unfortunately Royal Mail lost my parcel and I was left without my dress! Lady Voluptuous were lovely about the situation and sent me out a dress one size smaller. I was determined to get this one and was willing to squeeze into a smaller size to do so! Unfortunately I was unable to wear this dress because it squished my breasts down too much giving me that saucer-like look most of us ladies hate! The thing is I just couldn’t bring myself to sell it…

As some of you know I suffered a really horrible stomach illness at the end of last year that stretched out until just a few weeks ago. I was then diagnosed with IBS so the challenge to eat has resulted in my losing a fair bit of weight. Now I’m a vegetarian who is seriously picky already about what I eat and it’s only now i’m starting to get my diet together having cut out and cut down on some things I was eating. The good news though, I can finally fit into this dress! I’m wearing a 20-22 in this gorgeous bright Cossette dress.

Orange isn’t a colour I have worn much of and I really wanted to add some real summer colours into my dress collection. I love how the colour bounces off my complexion and the black incorporation make this one really easy to style. A couple of months ago I took a break from wearing hair extensions, weaves and wigs and decided to wear my hair totally natural. I knew with this dress that I wanted a really 1950s look so I was unsure how to go about styling my hair for this look. Seeing as I have an extensive scarf and bandana collection I thought it would be fun to put an Afro/Caribbean twist on a popular look. Often women wear them with a pompadoor bang or my personal favourite, the victory or suicide roll. I thought it would be cool to twist in my hair and let the front be open and loose curls.

I decided that I would go for a rockabilly 1950s look. Pairing the dress with my number one go-to heels from Hotter, the Michelle heels. Pulling out my faux leather biker jacket from Yours clothing and my old black rose cinch belt from Collectif. Most of my vintage dresses have a cap sleeve and require a bolero or cardigan when the weather is like this but as this dress as long sleeves it could be worn on it’s own. With a slight chill in the air I thought it best to keep the jacket at hand however.

Even though it’s been a crazy and hectic few weeks it’s been great to let the sun shine on my face, embrace all the new changes and make the most of things. I have to say it’s been fun doing so in a dress that I really wanted to wear! I’m pretty sure every woman out there knows what it’s like to have an item in their wardrobe that makes them say ‘I will wear it one day…’ I’m glad for me that the day has come for me to rock this summery number! The only thing that’s bad is the way I was able to do so.  Hopefully they’ll be more hot summer days and there will be some more things to smile about!

Seduced By Medusa! A Lady Voluptuous Review

Those of you know who know my blog and are familiar with my sense of style will know that I have a deep love and affection for Vintage clothing. When I first took note of the style I was only a small child, I remember watching the old movies and seeing images of the beautiful and glamorous stars of the time. I, like a lot of people had resigned myself to the fact that I would ever be able to wear such gorgeous clothes. I had 2 reasons for this, firstly my being a plus size woman limited my options of clothing even when it came to the current trends that were available, secondly I figured that those sorts of clothes would be impossible for anyone to find outside of old second-hand vintage stores and because of how far in time we were away from the decades that these fashions were born from.

When I first discovered plus size fashion blogs a few years ago so many of the women were sporting vintage inspired dresses! To see that this was an option really caught my interest and I took it upon myself to get myself measured and invest in a dress of my own. I’m happy to report that now in 2015 there is a plethora of options open to ladies of all sizes both on the high street and online. If you are a more alternative woman who loves the Rockabilly style then many of the dresses out there will be right up your street. If like me you go for a more classic form of the style, the choices are endless and can be adapted to suit the Rockabilly style.

As many of you will be aware one of the gorgeous bloggers I follow is the amazing Georgina Horne aka Fuller Figure Fuller Bust. She is a major lover of vintage fashion and amazing person to follow if you want to see great style and beauty tips; perfect for pinup admirers and women everywhere. Just a few weeks ago Georgina launched an amazing new vintage inspired clothing line that she created in partnership with Lady Vintage. Lady voluptuous is a range that was created with plus size women being the soul focus! Every single design is available in sizes 16-32.

Recently Lady Voluptuous ran a competition on their Facebook page. They had put up an image of the amazing Medusa dress in 2 colours: Royal Blue and Oxblood. All the entrants had to do was simply say which colour they preferred and 2 names would be selected at random to win, one selecting the blue and the other who had selected the oxblood. When I received a tweet from the brand telling me to check my Facebook I had no idea why, in truth I had forgotten that I even commented myself. To find out that I was the winner of the Royal Blue dress seriously shocked me and totally made my day! You all know my love of blue clothes so as you can expect this dress was on my wish list of items to purchase next payday!

The fit of the dress is amazing, made in a bengaline fabric the dress has amazing stretch, moulding to all of the hot and sexy spots to a woman’s physique and highlighting them really well. I should also note that this fabric doesn’t seem to crease either which is a bonus! I’m wearing this in a size 22 and have loads of room in the arms, bust and behind. I really like the length of the dress as it’s below the knee. Many plus women dislike their knees being exposed, in my case I don’t mind but as my legs aren’t perfectly toned this feature makes the dress that little bit more comfortable to wear. The neckline is just enough to provide a glimpse of cleavage whilst still being modest enough to wear anywhere. I always wear my fitted dresses with shapewear but to be honest the dress looked just as good without.

Doesn’t Georgina look amazing in this:

I decided to wear the dress with a metallic blue head scarf (once again I was having a battle with my hair), statement chocker, black heels and my heart charm bracelet. For an extra touch of glam I pulled out my pleather jacket with faux fur collar (from a previous New Look Inspire Collection). I think this dress would look amazing with electric blue heels, paired with gold or silver accessories. A cute cinch belt would be a nice addition for a little something extra. Acrylic jewellery might be a fun twist to provide a more casual touch. Available in emerald green, oxblood, leopard print and cerise there is a colour to suit all tastes and skin tones.

Lady Voluptuous – Vintage To The Max!

You all know the old saying, “the best things come to those who wait”, the plus size community is one group of people who can really relate to this sentiment. It’s no secret that beautiful, striking and interesting women have been hiding themselves away in tents for as long as we can remember. The choices open to us for clothing didn’t really give us much more of an option. If we wanted to wear gorgeous and on trend items the chances of doing so were very slim or extremely expensive. In the past few years we have seen a massive change, women are climbing out of their shells, regaining their confidence and enjoying their bodies. The amazing thing about this is that the fashion industry is really starting to take notice!

Many of you who are familiar with my blog will know that I am one of those women who was very lost when it came to my body image. It was through seeing women who looked more like me showcasing their fashion finds and embracing their body confidence that my outlook and self perception started to change. One woman in particular who really struck a chord with me is the beautiful Georgina Horne AKA Fuller Figure Fuller Bust. A few years ago I started to follow plus size fashion and beauty blogs and Georgina’s is one that I would always refer to and still do even today. When I first discovered Fuller Figure Fuller Bust I was on the hunt for vintage swing dresses. I had always loved the fashion and style and always wanted to see what one would look like on me… years of watching Greece on TV at Christmas will do that to you! I was always fascinated by the women of the era such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and many others and it was their fashion, beauty and sense of style that would often inspire me. Whilst scouring the blog pages I followed I came across some pictures of Georgina modelling for Lady Vintage and Collectif and I thought she looked amazing. After reading her detailed reviews I ventured out to see if I could find a swing dress that could work for me, my first purchase being from Vivien Of Holloway…

Even before making the choice to start my own blog I would always see what her tips were for bra and lingerie fittings and vintage clothing. It’s fair to say that she has created quite a niche for herself among plus size fashion bloggers and fashion bloggers everywhere. When I think of vintage pinup looks she tends to be the first person to spring to mind for me. When I discovered a few days ago that Lady Vintage had approached her to create a new plus size clothing line with them I was so happy for her! To see another blogger be respected so highly by a brand that they love and have worked with previously was a really nice thing to witness. To me it showed me that the feedback given to brands from buyers and bloggers is really important to them. It’s great to see that for the first time plus size women from sizes 16-32 are not the afterthought for a brand but the soul focus!

Here’s what Georgina had to say about the new label:

“When I was asked if I wanted to create a Vintage Inspired Plus Size line I didn’t know how to react! Of course it was a yes but imagine being asked if you could have a dream made real – what a feeling! I adore retro inspired fashion pieces and I’m I believe that plus size fashion shouldn’t be frumpy or boring, and so with this in mind I’ve tried my hardest to come up with pieces that will suit a variety of gorgeous voluptuous ladies. The names of the items come from female characters that I adore in books and plays and films and musicals, and I’d love to think those women would wear my creations if they could.”

I can’t wait to see what else is to come from the collection! I have already made my first purchase, (I couldn’t resist a gorgeous Cosette Dress) you will of course get a full review as soon as I take some pics.

For now here is the amazing new collection from Lady Voluptuous:
