Going To Bootcamp – A Yours Clothing Review

A plus size woman wearing camouflage jeans, khaki sweater, black backpack and black boots

Sometimes life can present many challenges. I know I’m not the only one who can find things pretty tough sometimes. Work may be stressful, the love life could be in the toilet, money is sometimes tight… whatever the case may be you could feel like it’s just too much! Ever feel like you need to just set some goals and reevaluate the situation? We’ve all been there in some way, shape or form. I personally have been trying to give myself a bit of a kick up the bum. I’m 30 years old now and although life is pretty good things can always get better. Metaphorically speaking you could say I’m putting myself through bootcamp! I’m working on my health and fitness, career is going well and i’m doing what I can to be a better friend and daughter. Dressing for the occasion khaki camouflage was my style choice.

I like my clothing to represent my mood. As i’m going through my personal changes I figured why not pick a transitional outfit that is not only perfect for the season, but for my life also. Yours Clothing got in touch with me recently and asked if I’d like to select some items. I’m a jeans girl, always have been always will be! These khaki camouflage skinny jeans caught my eye when I had first seen them. Usually I wear some sort of plain coloured jean, the most adventurous being some sort of acid wash. Opting to have a little more colour in my wardrobe I picked these in size 24. I have to say the fit is really good, these are high waisted with plenty of stretch.

Walking is something I do a lot of and so, good shoes are required. I love a pair of Chelsea boots and figured these would make for a fun bootcamp style look. As much as I like to dress to my mood, it’s fun to be on trend too. For the past few years cold shoulder items have been hugely popular and they still are! With that being said we all need to be prepared for the colder weather and so I figured this sweater would be a nice addition to the outfit. I decided I wanted an oversized fit and so I picked this one in size 26/28. I should note it’s also available in Dusky Pink.

We all have those essential items that we take everywhere! A water bottle, wallet, phone charger, makeup etc. I like a bag that can fit it all in that is easy to wear. Black bags suit almost every outfit. A backpack is both comfortable and practical and is a great item for the autumn and winter months. This medium size one can fit quite a few items and has an internal compartment also, perfect for your keys!

It was fun putting this outfit together. For me it’s a lot more casual than my day to day style allows for but sometimes that’s needed. Of course I had to include a little femininity where possible so I have my pinup style eye makeup as usual, hoop earrings and a purple lipstick. I’m wearing the aptly named Berry Bossy shade 886 from Maybelline New York.

I think if I was actually being sent off to bootcamp I would be ready and dressed for the task! I find that with life’s changes and challenges the important thing is to keep an open mind, embrace the change and make the most of the situation. Hopefully in the next few weeks and months I’ll be reporting on some really positive things that are happening but for now I’m gonna buckle up and work hard. After all the best things are worth working hard for!

Back To Black

There has been a lot of changes for me recently. The past few months has seen me go through many things such as changes and new developments in my work life, enjoying spending more time with friends and taking some much need Mayah time. Things have been quite stressful on a personal front and I recently experienced a really horrible stomach illness. As a result of all this I have decided to roll with the punches and make some adjustments to all areas of my life and of course this includes my look!

As I previously mentioned I had been suffering from a really uncomfortable and difficult to detect illness called Helicobacter pylori. To cut things short I was experiencing severe stomach cramps every time I ate anything. The pain was unbearable and could leave me in pain for hours at a time. Around 1 in 10 people suffer from this and if left untreated, you can be left with stomach ulcers. After a lot of tests and doctors appointments I finally got to the bottom of the situation and began treatment. Throughout all of this I have lost quite a bit of weight and have dropped just over a dress size. Now I love my clothes and although the slight weight loss is of course good for me health wise I’ve had some minor challenges when putting my looks together.

After one of our afternoon mate dates Hanna and I decided to take some blog pictures for each other, and so Hanna as always began to put her style genius to work and pull some clothes for me to wear. I was already wearing my ripped skinny jeans from Evans (size 24) and so Hanna thought a white tank top would go to creating an edgy casual look. It’s no secret that I enjoy wearing a variety of different styles and I tend to dress according to my mood. This look gave me a fitted yet comfortable look. I have to say I love these jeans and they have fast become a staple in my wardrobe. They are also available in white, i’ll be sure to pick up a pair of those very soon!

We thought it would be fun to pair the jeans with a plan white tank top. I’m usually the girl who wears shapewear or spanx to smooth the appearance of my belly but every now and again I decide against it and just “let it all hang out” as they say. There has been a trend for the past few years for women to embrace their VBL and in my case I do so depending on the look I want to achieve. As there is still a slight chill in the air I decided to pull on my oversized stripped shirt with pull strings from Zizzi. Unfortunately this shirt is no longer available as it comes from a previous collection but be sure to check out their website to see what new looks are available.

I have developed a really strong appreciation of this brand, the quality and style of their clothes is just perfect for me. When I think casual sexy I tend to gravitate towards Scandinavian clothing brands like Zizzi, Junarose and Carmakoma. These brands have a wide selection of plus size threads to suit women with a slight edge and quirkiness to their style. You’ll see some upcoming posts featuring these brands and there have been a few previous ones if you decide to check out some of my old posts.

I say it a lot and my previous outfit posts will showcase how much I love wearing beret style hats. I have many in several colours and as I was already wearing my black one when I arrived at Hanna’s I thought it best to leave it on for this look as I was experiencing some very dodgy hat hair underneath lol. Hanna let me borrow he platform chunky heels to finish off the look and we accessorised the outfit with a really cute leather backpack, very 90s.

Needless to say I had a lot of fun with this look and enjoyed the feel I had when wearing it. I felt very Stacy Dash in Clueless with this look and thought that a sharp pop of red lipstick would just set things off. I find that a lot of people tend to dress very sophisticatedly when wearing black and white clothes. It’s really easy to keep it simple and just add slight twists to the look to get the overall look you want. Have fun with what you have in your wardrobe and try playing around with casual and dressy items, the combination can make for a really sassy look!

Along Ivory Lines – An Evans Clothing Review

Hi everyone I hope you’re all doing well. I’m sorry that things have been a little quiet here on the blog the previous couple of weeks. Things have been hectic, crazy and quite emotional lately, a lot has been happening. Firstly my life had a major shakedown with things happening at work and in my private life. Things have started to come back together, giving me a little time to breathe and reboot.

So what’s been going on in my wardrobe? I have been enjoying some vintage items, a few dressy numbers and of course, casual items. I’ll be sure to share some of my looks with you very soon but to start I really wanted to share an item with you that I first saw a few weeks ago. Hanna and I was out for the day and we popped into the Evans store in Marble Arch here in London. Like a lot of us ladies, when there is a new collection to be seen and tried we head on to the nearest store to have a gander at some of the new lines. The Design Collective range had reached the stores and we had our eye on some cool options to try. One item that unexpectedly caught my eye whilst in the store is this ivory longline shirt. Everyone who knows my style will know that when it comes to shirts I tend to veer towards the sheer variety. I just love the easiness of sheer shirts, they can really make a simple look have a little bit of edge and they are always so comfortable!

I loved the simplicity of this one as it’s an item I know I could wear with pretty much every pair of jeans or trousers I own and even better, because of the length I could also wear this one as a singular item with some under-shorts for a shirt-dress look. One of the elements I really enjoy about sheer shirts is that they are always extra spacious in the arms. Given the tailored cut many of them have the arms are always really light and airy which gives me a look I like when trying to be casual yet formal, but a comfort that we all enjoy. I’m wearing this in a size 26. When it comes to shirts I often have to up-size if I want to be able to fasten all of the buttons without any gaping across the bust.

With this look I decided to pair these with my indigo stretch skinny jeans. These are also from Evans but I purchased these several months ago, the good news is that these are still available. I cannot stress enough how comfortable these are and because they are slightly high waisted they cinch you in just a little and give a really nice look to the leg. I’m wearing these in a size 26.

For accessories I wanted to keep things simple and work with my key jewellery colour, silver. I have a thing for silver jewellery and love the way it looks against my skin. I recently purchased a silver glitter clutch from New Look. I don’t own that many clutch bags but all ladies must have a choice of at least 3 I think, so I wanted a sparkly one. I love the metallic strap that can either be kept inside the bag or worn. Some New Look stores may still carry this one but unfortunately I can’t seem to find a link to share with you from their website. There is a similar clutch available in gold however.

I pulled out an old pair of glitter ballerina shoes that I bought from Primark ages ago. My small silver hoop earrings, black fringed head scarf and I was ready. I like to keep things simple but I still need to add a little something extra. In this case it was a touch of sparkle in places.

It’s All Yours! A Yours Clothing Review

Hey everyone, today’s post is a little different to my usual outfit reviews. Hanna and I were contacted by Yours Clothing and was offered the chance to do a collaborative post. Blogging can be quite a solitary thing to do and when I first started out I was doing pretty much everything on my own, my mum was taking my outfit pictures and I didn’t know that many bloggers closely. Hanna and I had met a couple of times, but it was at an event that we realised that we are neighbours! We have since been taking each other’s outfit pictures and have become really close friends. I have to say it’s so much fun having a close friend and fellow blogger just around the corner. She was a huge inspiration to me before we met so getting to know her so well over the past year has been a lot of fun and such a pleasure, I love this girl!

When it comes to style our weekly photo sessions have become a lot of fun and we usually finish up over a coffee and loads of laughs. It’s always fortunate when a good friend of yours is around the corner, you never know when you might wanna have a quick natter and as we are really similar in dress size we’ve been able to borrow the odd item of clothing from each other here and there. For me I’ve never had the luxury before, seeing as I’m the only plus size girl out of my old friends.

We quickly became familiar with each others sense of style, angles and poses and she is one of the few people I 100% trust when it comes to my style. Some of you may have seen some previous posts I have written where I have worn outfits she has styled on me. This time around we were posing together with the help of Hanna’s tripod and I really love how the pics came out. When it came to selecting our outfits I wanted something that would show off my personal style. My aim was to select something a little different that would also compliment Hanna’s chosen outfit. We both ended up with acid wash jeans and sandals but my look is a little more dressy in it’s overall style.

As some of you know I have a thing for Monochrome outfits and that’s exactly what I was going for here. Even though we’re now in the spring, there are some really great options out there for people who maybe want to keep things simple and add a splash of colour. In my case I wanted to add a little sassiness whilst keeping the shaded colours as the main focus. I selected the black and white sleeveless top with aysemtric hem, size 22-24. I have to say the cut and fit of this top is amazing and provides loads of room for boobs and your stomach area.

The dark grey acid wash super stretch skinny jeans were a must for me. In truth I had never tried a pair of acid wash jeans before and these were great for my first pair. I’m wearing these in a 26 but a 24 would have been fine also. I always like to wear my jeans slightly too big so that I have plenty of room for my extra lumps and bumps. I find that if you wear jeans a little larger they are more flattering to your shape.

Even though the sun is starting to shine brightly at the moment I still like that additional coverage to combat the chill that hangs in the air. I developed a love of longline cardigans a while ago. This black knitted cardigan with ladder stitch and fringing is so nice to wear. Despite the style it is really warm and adds a little to a style of clothing that would otherwise be very simple. Even though I have reams of confidence I, like many other women have those areas that I am not exactly in love with! The 3 quarter length sleeves cover the tops of my arms nicely which for me has ALWAYS been my problem area. I’m wearing this one in a size 22-24.

I like my footwear to be simple and stylish and these gladiator sling back sandals caught my eye as soon as I saw them. Unfortunately the fit of them wasn’t great on me and my feet kept sliding in them. The good news is after Hanna and I finished taking these pictures we of course tried on each other’s outfits and we ended up swapping sandals. For more detail on Hanna’s chosen outfit, be sure to head over to her blog for links.

When it came to my choice of accessories I wanted to bring a little of my music taste into the mix. I’m sure those of you who read my blog from time to time will be aware that I am a huge Michael Jackson fan! It’s not often that I can incorporate elements on his style into my own but when I get the chance I take it! I have had my white Fedora hat since I was 21! I don’t wear it often as there’s not many outfits I can include it with. I wanted that “Smooth Criminal” edge so in keeping with my usual style I added a black and white bandana underneath. Top this off with my MJ pendant and signature hoop earrings and my look was complete.

You know what I always say, have fun with your look play around and wear what makes you feel amazing! I had a lot of fun putting this look together and working on this post with Hanna and I hope we get the chance to collaborate this way again in the future. It’s always fun playing dress up with your friends and for me this was most definitely one of those times!

If you like these outfits and want to see what else is available from the new collection by Yours Clothing check out the website. Also Hanna has an amazing discount code which takes £10 off all orders starting from £20 with code BLOGGER21 (unfortunately this excludes all sale items and only works for newly registered email addresses).

Welcoming Spring And Summer With George

It’s finally the time of year when things are moving fast. The clocks have changed and it’s officially British summer time. I love this time of year, the days are longer, nights shorter and all of the fashion brands have launched their spring and summer looks for the season.

A couple of weeks ago Hanna, Isha and I attended the press day for George Asda at Somerset House. I have to say I was really impressed with loads of the things that they have on offer, from gorgeous new clothing options to home wear. The girls and I were able to select some items for review and one of the ones I selected is this gorgeous Lace Back Blouse. I love clothes that have a wrap detail in the front. I find that tops and dresses that have this detail work for women of all shapes and sizes and can add a subtle and sexy hint to a more casual or sophisticated item.

What I loved about this top is how light and airy it is. The long sleeves make this item something that is wearable on a warm day whilst providing additional coverage for the evening breeze that hits the air this time of year. I love that the colour and material make this an item that would be suited to work and days out. I’m wearing this in a size 24 as I wanted a slightly oversized look. I really like the crochey detail at the back which is a really nice feature and again, allows the top to have a light and airy feel when wearing it.

This top is currently available in sizes 8-24 and I can honestly say it would make a nice addition to any wardrobe. I paired this with a pair of Jeans from Junarose, unfortunately this particular pair is from a previous season but be sure to check out the website as there are some great new styles available.

Currently in London we are experiencing really changeable weather so when I put this outfit together my idea was to have something warm and comfortable and still be prepared for the weather to make a sudden switch. I thought that my Biker Jacket from Yours Clothing would be a good option.

Those who know me well will be aware that when I put my outfits together I ALWAYS try to colour coordinate. I have a big thing about wearing colours that compliment each other and so I often select makeup or accessories based on a colour somewhere in my chosen outfit. When I have the time I go as far as to matching my nail polish to an outfit too. You know what they say, the devil is in the details! I love the ombre dip-dye look of these jeans as there are several shades of blue all rolled into one.

When it came to accessories I was lucky to have had those pre-selected. The baby blue duffle bag I’m wearing is also from George and is currently available. I tried to find a link for this one on the site but I only came across the black version. For those of you who like the blue you may find it in selected stores. The sunglasses I have on are also part of the new collection so it’s definitely worth checking out the website to see what cool accessories they currently have on offer.

My black platform heels and large diamonte ring are from Primark and are old favourites of mine that I pull out from time to time. I thought my beret would also be a nice addition to the look and would give the outfit just the right amount of black that I wanted. Sometimes I like to keep things simple, I find that by doing this, the days when I do get dolled up are more fun.

We’ve reached the time of year when people are planning their summer holidays so take a look in your wardrobe and see what great items might be due a re-vamp. Of course we all like to add new bits to our closets so take a look at what’s out there. I have seen some great options on sale at great prices. George have some great bits available so don’t forget to take a look at the website.

Pastel Infusion – A Cut For Evans Review

One of the hardest things for me is finding ways to make simple casual styles fun and enjoyable to wear. I have a lot of fun getting all glammed up and I find that it’s easier for me to have fun with glamours looks. I think that because I had previously spent years in simple jeans and uninspiring tops that when it comes to playing around with basics I can often fall back into old habits I have spent time trying to break.

My old style consisted of mostly black clothes including  a lot of t-shirts, bootcut jeans and fairly boring items. Last year my mission was to fill my wardrobe with wild and garish prints, bright colours and interesting fabrics. The Cut For Evans range that launched early last year really intrigued me. Full of interesting neon tones, wild patterns and interesting cuts, I just had to grab an item from the collection and so I opted for the tube skirt in the collection. Check out how I styled it here.

The second collection from the Cut range which launched at the end of the last year brought with it a very different style to the previous collection. This time a different design team and a different approach brought us a more subtle range which still held the edginess of the original Cut For Evans Collection. There was a large selection of items that still contained wild and interesting prints, interesting shapes and fun outer wear.

At the launch event for the second collection I tried on several items and, one that most of the women were drooling over; myself included was the amazing Purple Digital Bomber Jacket! Bomber jackets are a really fun way of adding a large burst of colour or different dimension to complete an outfit. When I want to wear something that provides a decent amount of coverage but serves as part of the outfit I gravitate towards fun jackets and blazers.

The kaleidoscopic pattern with an infusion of purple and blue pastel colours seriously caught my attention. I love purples and blues as you all know and this piece serves as a funky and stylish casual item that can be dressed up or down. I picked up the jacket in a size 26. Despite being a soft and stretchy fabric, the upper arm area of the jacket has very little stretch so if like me you have large arms you may wish to size up for this one. I decided to wear this one with the indigo super stretch denim jeans, also available from Evans. In keeping with the pastel theme of the look I put these items together with a simple mesh tee from Primark and the main look was complete.

Being that I have problematic hair I have built up quite a collection of hair scarves and bandanas for those dodgy hair days lol. When I found an old lilac bandana that I bought about a hundred years ago I was really happy to see that the shade matched the bomber perfectly! My signature hoop earrings are always a must and a simple drop necklace finished off the look. I really look forward to wearing this jacket with some of my spring and summer items. I love the colours and I just think that it can add that little colour that’s lacking this time of year but be in keeping with the flowery tones that pop up during the warmer times of the year.

This look sees me bringing elements of my old style together with key features that I now embrace in my new look. Those of you who are familiar with my blog will know that I love experimenting and playing around with some of the older items in my wardrobe. If you have that odd tee or jacket you really love have a play around with other items in the wardrobe and your accessory drawer. You’ll be surprised what options you have and what cool looks you might come up with!

Remember whatever you wear, feel fabulous in it and wear it with a smile!

One T-Shirt Two Looks!

When it comes to shopping I try my utmost to buy items that I can use in many different outfits. I often buy simple and plain staple pieces that I can make adaptations with or use in a variety of different styles. Recently I picked up two long sleeved t-shirts, both exactly the same only in different colour ways from Yours Clothing at the combined cost of £12, a total bargain or at £8 each. I decided to do a bit of a mix and match session with some of the items in my wardrobe and I came up with 2 simple looks; one causal and the other a little more dressy.
Look number 1: Casual Chic
I decided to go really causal with this look. Sometimes you just want to be able to throw on something simple that you’ll feel comfortable doing the day to day tasks in. This is an outfit I could wear to work or just chilling in. I paired the tee with a simple pair of black jeans from the New Look Inspire range. With accessories I decided to add a large black handbag from Primark, simple silver bangles, hoop earnings, steel link choker and flat shoes.
Look 2: Sassy & Sophisticated
The funny thing about this look is that the changes are minor in comparison to look number 1. A simple tube skirt, tights and platform heels suddenly make an otherwise casual look a lot more dressy and sophisticated looking. The classic dogtooth print skirt is my favourite piece in this outfit!
After a recent blogger purchase from the gorgeous Hanna over at The Wardrobe Challenge this item is now a part of my collection. The skirt, originally from Excite Clothing feels amazing on and the length is really nice, as you can see I have worn this one over the t-shirt with the elasticated waist just under the bust line. I decided to wear the exact same accessories with the two outfits to highlight how a simple tweak can totally change the look of an outfit. A slight adjustment for this look was simply rolling up the sleeves, again the small tweaks can totally make the difference!
Overall the fit of the t-shirt is a really nice one. It simply sweeps over my frame comfortably with no tight spots anywhere. I picked this one up in a size 22/24. I wanted something with a loose fit that would compliment pretty much any pair of trousers or leggings. I could have gone for the size down but I often like bigger t-shirts as ones in my usual size can often cling tightly across the bust line which can look pretty hot, but sometimes I like to wear something a little more discreet, especially if I plan on wearing it to work.

High Fashion, High Style – The Work Of Carolyn De La Drapiere

One of the things I absolutely love is being able to discover new and interesting brands. When I was in attendance at the Definition Of Size Art Exhibition last year, not only did I meet some amazing people, I was introduced to a designer that I had never heard of before.

Carolyn Draper was one of the generous people to make a donation to the event. An item of clothing worth an amazing £200 was to be given to the lucky winner who participated in the raffle fundraiser. When my name was pulled from the hat I was so excited and I couldn’t wait to go down to the studio and try on some of the amazing items in store…

Here I am pictured wearing the Light Silk Chiffon Fancy Kaftan and the Slinky Silk Camisole With Beaded Detail. I absolutely love these 2 items together, they feel so light and soft on and I find them to be really versatile pieces. The Kaftan could be worn on it’s own with simple black lingerie underneath but if you would like a little more coverage then a cami underneath is most definitely the way to go.
I decided to take quite a sophisticated and fancy item and pair it with casual black jeans from the New Look Inspire range and flat shoes. I love the ruffled detail on the neckline and sleeves and I decided to keep the look very casual chic. A cute bag, or accessories could be matched to this one if worn on a night out or something. For me this has made it’s way into my wardrobe as a staple piece which I can easily dress up for a fancier occasion or wear as a more casual item.

The other item I selected was this Nepoleon II shirt in white. I am seriously lacking in shirts and when I saw this one I knew it would be perfect for work or a formal occasion of some kind. Made from 100% weave cotton the fit, feel and quality is fantastic and for me this shirt made me feel ready for business! I decided to wear this one with more of a casual feel and so I paired it with my black jeans from Junarose with diamanté calf detail.

Carolyn has a thing for funky and interesting cuffs and collars within her clothes and this shirt also came with the signature feature. The sharp cut of the cuff I feel gives the shirt that little something extra.

The lovely Carolyn herself

Carolyn prides herself on creating high end garments made from the best possible fabrics. Carolyn learned to design and make clothes at a very young age as her very own mother is an extremely talented seamstress and dress maker. Born in New Zealand, raised in Australia and travelling all over before settling here in the UK; she has seen and done many amazing things and I imagine, discovered many beautiful styles and fabrics along the way.
When I took a trip down to her studio I was able to leaf through loads of the beautiful gowns, one piece items and fresh fabrics that are yet to be used. The gorgeous silks, cottons and other materials come direct from France and Italy and many of them have been used in the same collections as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and many other well known designers.
It was refreshing for me to see that plus size women can buy pieces of the highest quality and style either off the shelf or customised for those special occasions that come up. I have to say I was so impressed with the attention to detail I saw whilst at the studio and I felt like a kid in a candy store! Carolyn and her lovely assistant Sian spent a lot of time with me in the store talking me through each piece that caught my eye and I was even lucky enough to go into the cutting room and see some of the amazing pieces being created!
How gorgeous are these fabrics?! The mix of colour is just beautiful.
This dress is just beautiful! I can imagine this being worn at a wedding, Ascot or some other formal affair. It’s just gorgeous and the detail is amazing!
What was clear to me from meeting Carolyn and her team is that every single customer who walks through the door is made to feel special. The personal touch is applied to everyone that they speak to and I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the store. In truth I would have been happy to stay even longer than I did! It was nice to be in an environment where the needs of the customer are equally as important as the designing and manufacturing of the pieces. The items I had received were beautifully wrapped and were given the De Le Drapiere golden seal…
One thing that myself, Carolyn and Sian all said throughout the day is that we wish plus size women would be more willing to just take a few more risks with fashion. I have been saying this a lot recently and I am sticking by it because I myself now own several garments I would have been too scared to even try on last year! Fashion should be about personality, style and quality. Way too many people think they have to stick to some strange boundaries that have been set by people they don’t even know! I personally think it’s a real shame!
