Wearing My Music

People often say that fashion is a form of expression. I would agree with that statement, however it’s not always true to everyone. I spent years working as a singer and musician and was only ever able to express my musicality by wearing fan based items. It was never easy for me to find items donning a music print. These days every time I see something remotely featuring music symbols it simply has to be mine!

Collectif Clothing is a vintage brand that I have loved for years. Recently they carried some lines with bold piano key prints and music based items. When I was browsing the sale section of their website a few weeks back I was thrilled to see that this skirt was available. When it comes to vintage fashion, swing skirts are my thing. especially Transitional items are always great to wear especially when you can pair them with other items in your closet.

You could call this a Parisian chic kind of style. When putting this look together I wanted to go for a classic, chic style. I have more beret hats and head scarfs than anyone so it was easy to include one of my black ones. The winter cold is still making the days uncomfortable and so I decided to opt for a turtleneck sweater. Believe me you can dress in a way that you want and accommodate the weather too, especially in the winter!

This skirt is a nice thick material with quite deep pockets too. I love the practical side it has in addition to the scarlet red stitched music notes. I decided to wear a pair of shoes that are extremely comfortable and vintage enough in style so of course I opted for my black t-bar heels from Hotter shoes. As always when I wear black on black fashion I go for a pop of red lipstick so when the clothes I have add that extra red, even better!

I really do hope that I continue to find music based items to wear because they will always have a valued space in my wardrobe! A bomber jacket with a giant treble clef at the back would be perfection!

Black And Gold – A Lane Bryant Review

*The Skirt and shoes are gifted items

Ever been through a daring phase when it comes to your style? I love trying out new styles and looks and seeing what works. I find that way too many people stick to the rules that they have set for themselves when it comes to their sense of dress. I used to tell myself that I couldn’t wear certain patterns, prints, and colours. I still have some colours I don’t play around with, due to the fact that they clash with my skin tone. I used to tell myself that I would never wear anything too shiny and that instantly changed last year when I purchased a metallic t-shirt dress! I think subconsciously I avoided shiny fabrics thinking that they would make me look larger in size than I actually am. Many people feel that way when it comes to white for example. I am happy to say I have since changed my tune and try to have fun with my clothes and, for the most part I’ll try out anything (within reason lol).

One thing that hasn’t changed is my need to coordinate my colours! I think this is part of my Caribbean DNA or something lol. I remember growing up my family and close family friends would always coordinate their looks and they made serious effort to look sharp! In some cases some might say they went quite far at times lol I remember seeing one of my mum’s friends in a bright pink suit, everything was the exact same shade of hot pink including the shoes, pocket square and bowler hat he used to top it all off! I usually like to work with 1 colour in many shades or I have some sort of contrast going. When I first saw this amazing black and gold pleated skirt from Lane Bryant I knew it had to be mine! I immediately knew how I would style it and so I was over the moon when the brand gave me the opportunity to review some of the garments in their current winter collection.

I’m wearing this skirt in a 22/24 and I have to say I absolutely love it! The fit is really comfortable and the elasticated waistband is a nice size, it’s thick enough for comfort and security but it doesn’t bend or fold against your stomach as you move. I paired this skirt with a simple black long sleeved turtleneck t-shirt. My initial idea was to go for a sort of Parisian-artist look. The French are well known for their love of beret hats and as this is my usual hat of choice, I knew I had to include my black one into the look. I wanted an outfit of black and gold!

You all know my love of Hotter shoes! The brand are well known for making shoes that have great quality materials, amazing comfort and fit! I have several pairs of shoes from them and I can attest to this! If you haven’t tried them out yet you really should! I was recently gifted a pair of Vanity Boots from the brand and these boots made the perfect addition to the look. The highest pair of heels I have had from Hotter and these are still built with amazing technology that makes for a pain-free experience when worn for long periods of time. The gold zip adornment is what first caught my eye when I saw these boots and they made for a nice feature on the shoe. To finish off the look I picked out a faux fur clutch and extra long gold chain.

It’s the time of year when everyone likes a little extra shimmer and sparkle and lucky for us sequins and glitter are very much in at the moment! Have fun with your style and get into the Christmas Spirit! There are some great winter looks this season from Lane Bryant. Check out their website, there’s something for everyone!

Casual Blues – Keeping It Simple

Sometimes you just have one of those days when you want to keep things simple fashion wise. If I’m having a “down” day when I’m running around doing errands or just moving at a slower pace I like to dress comfortably. We all have those casual items in our closets that make us feel good and are really easy go-to items. In my case I tend to go towards a simple pair of jeans and a top combo.

On a quiet Sunday afternoon after work I like to go for a walk around my area from time to time. As we still have that winter chill that is very prominent in the air I like to dress in a weather-appropriate way. Many years ago I bought a simple three quarter length sleeved top from Simply Be I love basic items like this as they are timeless and pretty much for any trend. I love the colour against my skin tone and this is a top that I have worn pretty much everywhere. I decided to pair this with my indigo super stretch jeans from Evans. I usually go for black jeans but I think every girl needs a staple pair of indigo jeans in her closet.

To finish off the look I went for my Legroom chain boots from Fashion World. This time of year is definitely boot weather and the chain detail complimented the gold of my statement necklace perfectly. Dealing with a bad hair day my favourite black beret from Simply Be was my final touch along with gold twisted hoop earrings and I was set.

As many of you know my all time favourite colour is blue. For me you simply can’t go wrong with it. I love blue because it’s a colour that can be worked with in so many ways. Fun and interesting prints can work with any shade and you can wear both gold and silver jewellery items when accessioning.

We all have those days when we just want to throw something on and go about our business. Just a few simple touches can make a very simple outfit a lot more fun to wear. In my case when I feel that way I make sure to put my make up on, some earrings and a cute necklace and that’s me set. You can literally throw anything on and make it work a lot of the time. If you have that go-to colour that you always feel good in, start there.

Remember whatever you wear, feel fabulous in it and wear it with a smile!

Blue Magic – A Lane Bryant Review

I love being able to blend work wear into my casual style. We can’t all afford to have totally separate wardrobes for day wear and night attire. These days I tend to be all over the place a meeting here, a dinner there. It’s not often that I have the chance to go home and change from location number one before I’m required at location two. For me the busy schedules and numerous commitments can make styling your looks be somewhat of a challenge sometimes. I work in a customer facing role where how you present yourself can be just as important as how you present the products you’re selling. Luckily in my case I am able to incorporate my wardrobe into my work life making it easier when shopping and selecting my outfits in the morning.

I have said many times on this blog how much I love the colour blue and that whenever I see anything in the colour I’m instantly drawn to it. When I first saw this Embellished Button Back Tee from Lane Bryant it was a must have item for me! This was something I knew I could wear to work at the office and still add a casual twist to the look to make it wearable at any time. Despite the fact that blue is my favourite; I definitely don’t own enough items in the colour so when I do see one I like it’s always a positive thing for me.

The Tee has a black panel at the back and small buttons all the way down the back. With a lightweight feel I have worn this top with a pencil skirt at work, jeans and leggings. The short sleeves make this one I like to match with jackets. Seeing as it’s getting colder by the day the extra coverage is more than welcome in my case.

I took these pictures on a pretty weird London day. With the constant stop-start game the clouds were playing making it rain every other hour it was hard to know what to wear. I decided that even though I had an umbrella to hand I would wear a hat so as not to get the front of my hair wet. I pulled out an old sequin beret that I bought from Primark years ago and the colour was just right to compliment the tee. A simple black pair of leggings was my next choice. To finish off the look I pulled on my PU Biker Jacket from Yours Clothing and slipped on my Shawberry Boots from Hotter. After adding my mandatory hoop earrings and necklace I was ready and set.

When I was going through the pictures for this post I got to think about what we mean when we call something a staple piece of clothing. Some people would refer to a staple item as something basic that we all own like plain black top or something like that. For me a staple piece of clothing is an item that I can incorporate into a series of outfits and even wear across different styles. This Lane Bryant Tee for me is one of those items not only because of the colour but because of the cut and fit. The material makes this one hang nicely against your frame. The sheer material is really soft against the skin and doesn’t cling tightly in any area. I got this one in a size 22/24 which for me worked out really well due to the buttons at the back. A smaller size most definitely would have fit but one or two of the buttons may have gaped ever so slightly. If like me you have think about the size of your bust or if you have any back fat then you might want to up size in this one.

You know what I always say, go through your wardrobe! Pull things out, see what items work together either through colours, prints and fabrics and see if you can get at least 2 different looks out of some of your clothes. This will not only give you more outfits to play with on a smaller budget you’ll also get a proper wear out of your clothes. In my case I like to have items I can wear either across seasons or items that look stylish and chic both during the day and night. You might find some cool combinations that you hadn’t thought of previously.

Remember what ever you where, feel fabulous in it and where it with a smile!
