The Sensational Scarlett & Jo And The SS15 Shoot

The past few weeks have been a major whirlwind for me, the most exciting thing was of course working with the amazing Scarlett & Jo for their Spring and Summer campaign, and getting to know 7 of my other blogging sisters better.

The cupcake party was a lot of fun and it was nice to discover how the others girls came to start their blogs and what journey’s they have been on in the process. I have said it before and I will say it again, the highlight for me was of course working with Scarlett & Jo. When I first came into the offices and met with Aoife, Louisa and Gifi the incredible journey started for me. Everyone was so welcoming and so lovely and what really struck me and put a smile on my face was of course meeting the amazing designer Gifi. For years I had spent years working as a professional singer and musician and Gifi really reminds me of many of the people I had met during my years on the stage and in theatre. He is such a character; full of life, zeal and creativity. I really gravitate towards fun and creative people and he is exactly that. I was surprised and extremely flattered to learn that he had seen my reviews of the Powerfit dress on the Evans website and then my blog posts about their clothes. It was such a pleasure to speak with him in person and to see how much passion he has for creating amazing clothes for women everywhere. Scarlett & Jo as a brand is very precious to him and he and the team are committed to bringing women beautiful garments which look great on women of all shapes and sizes. The detail and engineering that goes into the clothing is second to none and it shows whenever you wear them. I was just saying to a friend of mine earlier today that nearly 2 years after buying my first dress and wearing it EVERYWHERE it still looks and fits exactly the same as it did the first day I wore it!

Here are my final images from the shoot:

I was so honoured to have been asked to join the girls in the current campaign. So much thought has gone into every single item in the collection and there really is something to suit everyone. I have to say it was so nice to be working with a group of people who all share the same passion about fashion for the plus woman and every picture taken on the day came out so beautiful. Hats off to the incredibly talented Nicky Rockets for all of his work, he was such a pleasure to shoot with. The collection is rolling out onto the Evans website as I write this post with items being added daily. Selected stores which stock the Scarlett & Jo range will also be getting these items so keep your eyes and ears open for updates.

Here are some of my favourite out-take pictures taken on the shoot:

Cupcakes And Dresses, A Plus Blogger Fashion Party!

My journey to confidence has brought with it many changes. I used to live in black and boring clothes, would never wear garish prints or colours and would always play it safe with my fashion choices. For years some of my closest friends had tried their very best to encourage me to wear dresses and skirts. You wouldn’t think I was ever that way if you met me today but it’s true! One brand in particular forced me to change my outlook and be bold and that brand is of course Scarlett & Jo.

I hadn’t worn a dress since I was a child and for years I hadn’t even considered it, but as soon as I saw their panelled dresses hit Evans stores I knew I had to get my hands on one! The dress that has since been named their Powerfit dress is a style that seriously blew my mind. I had seen some bloggers and fashionistas wearing this dress and despite the fact that all of these women came in a different sizes and shapes it suited everyone! My first was the blue dress and I was hooked. I now own 5 colours (Check out how I styled the cream contrast version) and I will most definitely be picking up more when they hit the shops! To see my review of the dress click here.

Check out these gorgeous dresses due to come out in the SS15 Collection!

I later discovered their peplum style dress which I absolutely love and this became my go-to outfit last Valentines day. Check out my previous post and I’m sure the dress will speak for itself!

I was instantly hooked on the Scarlett & Jo brand, I saw them as a brand that brought classic old Hollywood and vintage styles into the modern market and with a fresh and interesting twist. Last week I recieved an email from the brand asking me if I would like to join them for a bloggers cupcake party and photoshoot, you can not believe how excited and honoured I was to be asked! The following day I was on my way to a fitting at their offices, I was both nervous and excited at what was happening. It was all happening so fast that I didn’t really have a lot of time to take it all in. 7 other bloggers had been selected to participate and each of them had had a dress designed specifically with them in mind. As I had joined the group quite late into the process I was expecting to wear one of the new lines that had been designed or a dress that was made with another girl in mind. I had seen the most gorgeous tropical print fabric and I fell in love with it, I was then shocked to find that the design team had been asked to throw something together for me to wear at the shoot. The following day when I arrived at the gorgeous mansion Home House; there was a pair of trousers, a skirt and a powerfit dress all made in my size and in the fabric! As you can imagine I went straight for the dress and it ended up being the first outfit I would take pictures in.

As the day progressed I had seen more beautiful colours, fabrics and garments made than I was expecting. I found myself wanting to buy every single frock lol I guess I just have to wait until the collection comes out to get my hands on them! I will say this though, the amazing details in the cuts and shapes of the dresses will flatter anyone who tries them. You guys will be in for a serious treat!

The highlight of my day was spending so much time with the other blogger babes. Most of the girls I had met at previous functions and events but I hadn’t been awarded the opportunity to really converse in the past. It was great sharing our admiration of the clothing and of the day. These women are not only gorgeous but they all have a deep affection for making plus women look and feel in amazing in whatever they choose to wear! I felt more uplifted and more inspired as the hours passed, and I have to say it was an amazing experience for every possible reason! I am still buzzing from it today and I cannot wait to see what the finished images look like!

My Beauty Shoot With Chiara Aprea

Some of you may remember a previous post I wrote about a photoshoot I did with my very talented friend Chiara Aprea. We did a boudoir themed shoot where I played around with many vintage looks and styles. Sweet and sultry, sexy and seductive, fun and silly… These were all different looks we tried out and I had an absolute blast throughout the whole process. Chiara seriously pushed me out of my comfort zone and I am so happy that she did because she made me see myself in a way that I hadn’t previously. I remember my whole time in front of the camera I was eager to learn new poses, try out new things and have fun with it. The entire time Chiara was encouraging, patient and a lot of fun to shoot with. Anyone thinking of trying out something like that you really should, even if no one else ever sees the pictures afterwards. I found the experience liberating, exciting and the end result was a very happy and confident Mayah!

To see some of the pictures click here for the previous post.

My Beauty Shoot With Chiara Aprea-Mayah1My Beauty Shoot With Chiara Aprea-Mayah2

Shortly after we wrapped up the first shoot and I had received some of the images, Chiara reached out to me about a new style package she was introducing. She wanted to do some photos totally based on the face with me as the person to launch it. The beauty package is all about detailed facial expressions and interesting hair and make up. I was seriously excited to hear about this as I tend to wear the same make up everyday and I thought it would be cool to play around more with my face and hair as opposed to my clothes. Chiara wanted to transform me into a modern day geisha and an angry dominatrix; as you can imagine neither of these styles were like anything I had previously tried out and I was excited and intrigued to see what she had in mind for me.

At first we started with my hair, luckily for me I had some extensions in because this was about to be the biggest hairstyle I had ever sported! A gigantic quiff was swept up in the front of my hair and accompanied by 2 backward fishtail plaits. One or 2 hair flowers were used with some real flowers inserted in places. Layers and layers of eye makeup was then applied to my face pinks, golds, yellows and of course some eyelash extensions. I was then treated to super bright pink lips and a delicate brow. The end result was me as a technicolor modern day geisha.

Selfie fun with Chiara before we started shooting look #1

I really loved these images when I first saw them. I had never even known I could look so nice in such a different character. Playing around with fans, parasols and fun poses is always fun but nothing beats seeing the end result. I had so much fun with this look that I knew changing into an angry dom with a totally different temperament might be somewhat of a challenge.

I had a total transformation and what’s more, I never even took off the make up from the geisha set. With a few additions and tweaks I went from sweet and earthly to a woman with attitude and a total bitch face! I have to say it was fun to be in both roles and I really liked the fact that the two looks were almost polar opposites.

Selfie fun with Chiara before we started shooting look #2

In the space of about 15-20 minutes I went from being a sweet geisha to a chick with way too much attitude.  My hair was swept up into a tight high pony tail restrained by a black scarf. A dark and metallic smokey eye was accompanied with black and white eye liner and framed with a sharp and squared brow. To finish off Chiara applied a deep purple colour to my lips.

Standing there covered in black pleather clothes and extreme makeup on I was told to just think of something that seriously makes me angry. Channelling my inner diva and going back to my years in the theatre seriously helped me here. Pretending to be raging mad isn’t as easy as you would think when you’re having such a fun time working with a friend. My aim was to concentrate on my expressions and I seriously hope that the angry bitchy look was achieved. I think I most definitely got it in some of the frames.

My Beauty Shoot With Chiara Aprea-Mayah3

I love working with Chiara each time brings with it a new experience and new challenges. The first shoot really made me push myself by being shot in my lingerie for many looks, a huge confidence boost. This time I had to really focus on my face which was something I hadn’t previously done when taking pictures of any kind.

I already have some ideas in mind for another beauty shoot and I’m very sure Chiara and I will collaborate again sometime in the near future. What can I say, I don’t know a single woman out there who doesn’t love playing dress up and experimenting with make up. I figure if I’m going to do it I may as well take some cool pictures and have something to look back on.

If any of you have considered doing a shoot of this kind and you live in the UK you really should drop Chiara a message and make your booking. She has a variety of different packages at amazing prices so don’t miss out if you’re thinking about it.

Liebster Award

Starting out as a blogger is a new and exciting experience. Suddenly you find yourself surrounded by loads of like minded people, quite a bit of a social scene and loads of online interaction. Whilst scrolling through Twitter the other day I had received a notification from a friend and fellow blogger Michaela aka Cardifforniagurl.

To my surprise Michaela had nominated me for the Liebster Award. The Liebster is an online award that recognises newer bloggers for their contributions to the blogging world, in a way it’s bit of  a “welcome to the family of bloggers” type of thing. Michaela enlisted me with some questions to answer, so without further ado here are my answers:

1. What made you want to start blogging?
After years of hating my personal appearance I finally woke up one day and thought I’m in my twenties why am I dressing like I’m 15 years older than I am?! I changed my outlook overnight! I guess it’s true what they say when you’ve had enough, something just clicks. After discovering how much fun I could have with fashion and experimenting with different looks I started to receive a really positive response from friends and acquaintances on my social media pages like Facebook and twitter. I got to a point when I thought rather than constantly answering the same questions about what I was doing and where I was shopping I may as well set up a page and then friends and anyone with an interest can take a look at it at their own leisure.

2. What is your favourite fashion brand?
That’s a really tough question! I tend to go to different brands for different styles of clothing. For vintage fashion I love Collectif clothing, for more modern items and casuals Junarose, Simplybe, Fashion World, Asos and Evans are also top favourites of mine. Like I said a hard one for me to answer and there are still so many other brands I could have named lol!

3. Who is your favourite band/artist?
Michael Jackson! Hands down he is my ultimate artist, always has been and always will be. <

4. What’s your favourite colour?
Blue. I love all shades of the colour and whenever I see cute clothes and accessories in the blue I just have to have them!

5. If you could be anyone famous for the day who would you be?
This is such a tough question. I think I would want to be someone like Elizabeth Taylor. She is one of the most beautiful women ever! Also I love her passion and her fight, the way she became an activist and supporter to those dealing with HIV and Aids was so honourable. There are many more people it would be amazing to be for the day but she’s one of the first to come to my mind.

6. Cats or dogs?
Cats all the way! I love them!

7. What is your current job?
I sell kitchens and bathrooms for a living, not as glamorous as one would hope but it pays the bills…

8. Where is your dream holiday location?
Miami! Sun, Sea, Sand, gorgeous location and amazing music! All the things I love rolled into one place!

9. What is your favourite beauty brand?
For Pampering I would have to say Lush, for make up I tend to use a lot of Sleek products and for fragrance Jo Malone.

10. Would you rather be twice as smart or twice as happy?
I think twice as happy. For one thing nobody likes a brainy box know it all lol. No seriously I think I would rather be happier, the little things can keep you smiling and those are the things that mean a lot to me personally. Good question!

In true Liebster tradition I shall nominate some bloggers that I follow and present them with a list of questions. So my nominees are:

Michaela – Cardifforniagurl
Mookie – Mookie’s Life
Sam – Fattyboomtatty
Hanna – Hanna Wears (Hanna has re-launched her blog formally known as The Wardrobe Challenge)
Hollie – Pretty Big Butterflies
Lucia – Ucantwearthat
Sarah Doyle – Plus Size Proud
Katt – Miss Kitty Kaos
Isha – An Autumns Grace

And here are your questions ladies:

1. What inspired you to start a blog?
2. What are your must have items that complete your look?
3. Who most inspires your in your style?
4. What one thing about plus size fashion are you most proud of?
5. If you were given a million pounds and you had to spend it in a day what would you buy?
6. Bags or shoes?
7. If you could give anyone a makeover who would you chose and why?
8. If you were a cocktail what would you be called and why?
9. What is your one pet peeve?
10. If you had your own fragrance what would you call it?

My Journey To Confidence

This image bellow represents me at my most confident. When I did my recent photoshoot with Chiara Aprea I was sceptical, nervous and felt pretty uncomfortable with my lack of dress. She not only pushed me to take the risk and have fun with the camera, reminding me that I could always delete any images I didn’t like.

I was able to see myself in a way I hadn’t previously when I saw the final images. I felt sexy, chic and most important…CONFIDENT!

Many of you know how I feel about confidence and how important I think it is to have some. Looking back I honestly think that my passion for confidence stems from the fact that until quite recently I really lacked in that area. Those who know me personally may argue with that fact because I’m outspoken, I find it easy to talk to people and I make friends easily. Having said all of that I like many women (not just plus size women) would hide in my clothes and do my utmost to blend into the background and not been seen.

It was a little over a year ago that I got fed up with trying to be in the background like a sheet of wallpaper and so I decided to venture out and put myself through my paces and really work hard to be bold! I scoured the internet looking for bright and edgy clothes for plus size women and decided that as I was only 25 at the time I really needed to live a little and not be so scared to be seen.

I played around with my clothes, met loads of other amazing plus size women and really started to be able to look in the mirror and not only accept what was staring back at me…I actually liked what I saw! After meeting the lovely Anita Bellamy and hearing her tales of modelling as a plus woman and her passion about confidence; I not only realised that I had made a good friend, I had met someone who saw confidence just as I did. Being at the Definition Of Size Art Exhibition last October led me to open my eyes even further…

I would never have been seen in an outfit like this one before, now I have more bright and bold colours in my wardrobe than I do black items!

I believe that everyone has the right to feel amazing in their own skin, look good and should be able to walk with their held high regardless of what other people think. The most important opinion you can hold is that of yourself! The one person you will have to deal with every single day of your life is you! If you are able to find an element of confidence many things in your life will change for the better.

Since I have found an inner confidence I take more risks with my personal style, break the rules I had previously set myself and in turn I feel so much better for it! I have made some amazing friends this past year and I am still pushing myself to be even more confident within myself. I think that when your esteem is in the floor it’s all too easy to abuse yourself mentally, physically and emotionally. When you take pride in yourself you will want to better yourself in as many ways as possible and I believe that your luck will start to change. A positive outlook can only improve things, it has for me!

We need to build each other up and try to find the beauty in all of us. It might be the way you speak, the way you treat a person, the twinkle in your eye or your smile.

Beauty is everywhere it’s not that hard to look for it either! Just make the best of what you have and let it shine!

No matter what you do try and do it with a smile!

Faye Floral Doll Dress – A Collectif Clothing Review

One of the things I absolutely love to do is get myself all dolled up for a night on the town! When I first laid eyes on the gorgeous Faye Floral Doll Dress by Collectif I knew instantly that it had to be mine! When you have that amazing night out or date with that special someone circled in the diary; you want more than anything to look your absolute best. The ritual of getting ready is one that many women enjoy; for me I like to spend as little time as possible and have a simple but show stopping outfit that can do all the talking for me…
When I think of the fashion from the 1940s and 1950s one word springs to mind, glamour.
Beautiful stars like Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Davis, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich and many more had one thing in common. These women were some of the best dressed ladies out there! It is through their fashions and many others before them that we now have new variations of the style that was common place to them back in the day!
The Faye Dress by Collectif to me is a special piece. With the sweetheart detail that is surrounded by a cluster of flowers, tulle shoulders with dress overlay, and built in petticoats you simply cannot go wrong! There are so many black dresses out there that are beautiful, many of which need some added help in making them stand out amongst the rest. With many of my other dresses I find myself searching for Boleros, petticoats and belts to give them that extra something. When it came to wearing this dress the only addition I wanted to add to the look was a serious vintage hair style and so as you can see when I did my photoshoot with Chiara Aprea I opted for a major victory roll!

Now when it comes to the fit of the dress I will be honest, I had to size up twice in this dress and pick up a 3xl. The reason for this is that the tulle over the bust and shoulders has absolutely no stretch so if you do have a sizeable bust as I do, bare that in mind. I usually wear a 20 or 22 in Collectif clothing which in this dress would be a 1xl or 2xl. If you do have a smaller size bust then you may be able to wear your regular size. The skirt of the dress fit me perfectly in the 1xl but I simply needed the extra wiggle room in the bust area. In these pictures I am wearing an over bust corset but the dress does fit me perfectly without it, I simply wanted to enhance the curvature in my waist for the photographs. The body of the dress has plenty of room and the built in petticoat gives it that extra something that would be perfect for a dinner date or a night of swing dancing!
Stock Images Courtesy Of Collectif
I can’t wait to actually wear this one out and about as I feel so beautiful wearing it and I know I’m not the only one! The great news is that this dress is available in a range of sizes and is one of the first dresses that Collectif has introduced with a plus size range going all the way up to 4xl. The £115 dress may not be a cheap purchase but it really is worth the cost as the quality is amazing and the style is timeless! I was able to pick this one up in sale and in even better news, the plus sizes 1xl – 4xl are still on sale and reduced to an amazing £65!

My Boudoir Shoot With Chiara Aprea

One of the hardest things for any women out there to do is to look in the mirror and absolutely love what she sees! About a year and a half ago I pretty much hated myself physically. I would poke holes in my appearance, jump in with insults before others could and like many plus size people, I would hide away in black clothing hoping to blend into the background. I would do things to make myself feel better like get my hair done or my nails but I would still find fault with myself. Those who have known me for quite some time will know that I may be confident in my personality and with my talents but my image was the one area that had always taken a beating leaving me with limited self confidence.
When you spend years of you life listening to the comments of others and telling yourself that being big makes you ugly it can be hard to have any real level of self esteem. What changed for me was when I reached my mid twenties. I decided that I had spent more than enough time hating myself and that if I didn’t “pull myself together” I would spend way too much of my time beating my own confidence into the ground. I experimented with different styles of dress, playing around with fashion and make up and have now reached a place where I can look in the mirror and actually like what I see!
When I was at Plus London last year I met an amazing girl who not only is a stunning plus size model but amazing photographer! Chiara Aprea is fast making a name for herself specialising in plus size photography with an aim of building confidence in her clients. When I saw the gorgeous photoshoots she had done of some of my friends I thought you know what i’m gonna call her and try this out. I dropped her a message and we made plans to do a boudoir themed shoot…
I arrived at her home with a suitcase full of vintage inspired clothes and some lingerie. I was full of nerves but excited to get all dolled up for the shoot. Chiara worked on my hair and make-up and transformed me into a vintage sex kitten! We were soon ready to get snapping away and I went in with a mind set that even if I don’t like how I look in some of the shots, the experience would do me some good…

As we first got started I was really nervous and self conscious and Chiara convinced me that I looked good and that I had nothing to worry about. She directed the shoot giving me hints and tips on how to pose. We played around with different hair styles, clothes and backdrops, always fun for any girl who likes playing dress up! For me I found this experience extremely daring! I had posed in as little attire as a sheer sheet and my underwear, right the way up to a corset and cape with petticoats on. I started out as a shy woman doing something for a little fun and ended the day feeling revived, confident and fabulous! From start to finish Chiara made me feel comfortable, in control and beautiful. She would give me sneak peaks of some of the frames and in truth I looked one hundred percent better than I could possibly have anticipated!
Not only did it feel good to have a friend on the other side of the camera, I felt confident that she would be able to get the best out of me. As a plus size model herself with some beautiful photos I knew that she was able to capture me how I wanted. Looking back in hindsight I really believe that what had me nervous in the beginning were my former doubts trying to creep in!
When the shoot was done and we went to review the pictures I expected to pick out maybe 5 or 6 that I liked and I ended up wanting to purchase almost every single frame taken in the shoot! I had never thought I could look so good and I am so glad I did it! Putting myself in a new situation that was totally out of my comfort zone and pushing myself to try something new has given me new insight. You have to be willing to take more risks, you may love the end result!

If any of you have considered doing a shoot of this kind and you live in the UK you really should drop Chiara a message and book in your shoot! You will not be disappointed!

The Hamburger Queen Grand Final

We all love to see is our friends doing well and making huge strides in their life. One of my old friends, who I wish I got to see more often has been busy carving out quite a name for himself in the entertainment biz and it’s no shock for me to see him stepping out into his own…
Many years ago when I was doing a lot of improv and musical theatre I met one of the most exciting, flamboyant and talented people I have ever worked with! Through various projects with the Camden People’s Theatre and London’s famous Roundhouse he and I collaborated and shared the stage together. After all this time it’s such a great thing to hear him feature on radio shows and see his many appearances on TV shows and in magazines. I’m sure many of you will be familiar with his work and may have even seen his current show Palava at the Roundhouse.

Scottee (or Scott as I know him) has never been afraid of being himself and encouraging others to do the same. We first worked together when we were about 14 years old and even back then he was pushing for greatness! When I first heard that he was spearheading a beauty pageant/talent show for plus size people I was thrilled! Scott has always been the kind of person eager to have a laugh, embrace himself and encourage others to do the same so this event is more than fitting to his character.

Charity Blog Challenge – Not A Hair Out Of Place

One of my gorgeous blogging sisters Hannah from Fabulousy Fat Fashion has decided to do something very courageous and brave and shave off all of her hair for Charity. In order to help raise awareness to a cause very dear to her heart she has asked some of the bloggers out there to write a little something about their favourite hair accessory or style and I of course wanted to help out and join in on the action.
Here’s what she had to say about shaving off her hair and her inspiration behind doing it:
I have decided that I want to shave my hair off for charity because honestly, I’m not fit enough to run a marathon, I’m too chicken to do a boxing day dip and I’m too lazy to do a sponsored clean!
I currently work for Cleveland College Of Art & Design as Students’ Union President and we have been working with the lovely people over at Hartlepool Families First since September on bits and pieces, but now I want to do something really big and really help an amazing charity out who do so much for the local community. I wish I could explain to you all the amazing work that HFF do, but honestly they do so much I’d be writing forever! However here are a few of the amazing things they do.
They empower the deaf community by putting on health related and social activities. They offer a health bus service to monitor peoples lives and help them to not develop long term conditions. They have a special needs home support scheme to support parents/carers and even offer specialist and stimulating toys and play equipment. They offer one to one support for young adults and children with behavioral issues and additional needs such as autism. There are so many other amazing things that they do, but I would be listing them all day!
So with that in mind, I’m going to cut off my precious hair! Those who know me know how vain I am (not a day goes by without a selfie) and so this is going to be a huge step for me, which is why I’m asking for your support to raise as much money as I possibly can for such a brilliant charity! To donate, visit or text HCUT88 £ (then any amount from 1-10) to 70070!
Thank you,”

When it comes to our look and personal style one element in our look that many of us tend to take for granted is our hair. I personally don’t put as much effort into the way I style my hair as some of my friends do and sometimes I find a solution to this problem is to just wear a hat.

It’s no secret that I am a huge Michael Jackson fan and one of the accessories he uses a lot to complete his look is a fedora hat. I absolutely love this look and I too have implemented the traditional head piece into my wardrobe.

These pictures were taken a few years ago now when I was just 21 years old. I decided to put my own stance on his signature look from the video Smooth Criminal.
The thing I love about this piece is that it really lends itself to many different trends and it can be sophisticated, sexy, stylish and chic all at the same time.  I really should dust this hat off and wear it again sometime soon.

Barbie, A Doll Or Much More?

Over the past few weeks I have seen a selection of images floating around on social media about a plus size Barbie doll. I personally I have refrained from putting out my opinion on the plastic figure but the more I see the image the more it gets me thinking…

Barbie is one of those images that we all recognise and many of us women have had a Barbie doll given to us at some point in our lives. I had a collection of them when I was younger all dressed in different styles ranging from the classic princess, secretary, mermaid and several others. The one common factor with these toys is that they seem to showcase a certain kind of beauty and sex appeal that we drum into our kids from a seriously young age. The blonde bombshell with sizeable boobs, curves and a face covered in make up are what we are used to seeing. I personally have never had an issue with the Barbie image……………until recently.
There was an article that popped up on my Facebook news feed I have to say I was totally shocked! There is actually a woman who idolises Barbie and is planning to live on nothing other than air and sunlight! When I read the article I was startled and shocked. Valeria Lukyanova has taken her obsession with Barbie to dangerous heights.
She not only wanted to look like Barbie and does her hair and make-up in a way that makes her look artificial but she pretty much wants to be the embodiment of the character. She was recently quoted to say ‘In recent weeks I have not been hungry at all; I am hoping it’s the final stage before I can subsist on air and light alone’. For me this is seriously dangerous, this goes beyond trying to dress or do your hair like the doll but trying to have a doll like figure which I would imagine is seriously damaging to her physical and mental health.
Here are just a couple of pictures of Valeria Lukyanova.

Barbie has for a long time been a figure of inspiration for women who are aiming to achieve a certain image. I don’t have any issue with that but I do have an issue when it starts to become dangerous. I would hate to think of girls curled over the toilet bowl in their bathroom doing harm to themselves to reach an ideal that was set by a plastic doll. Image is so much more than the way we look. We can be affected emotionally and mentally by trying to reach certain standards set by our society and as I have previously stated on other posts, I think the most important thing is to focus on our health and fitness.
Earlier on in this post I previously touched on the current conversation circulating social media about the idea of a possible plus size Barbie doll. When the mock up image of the plus size doll featured next to the standard doll first surfaced online, it got some seriously strong reactions! Many people have been wondering if toy companies should join in the debate about image and size by creating larger sized toys, or if they should remain as they are and continue to conduct business in the way that they have been for many years.
The doll had people up in arms as many felt that it was promoting an unhealthy lifestyle to our kids. Some felt that the look and image of the doll was a bad representation of what some bigger women look like. A common view was that the double chin on the figure was taking things a bit far and that perhaps a happy medium could be reached. Why not create a doll of slightly larger proportions to the current doll that we have without the image that the plus size toy presented?
For me the whole thing has got me thinking about what images we push forward to the children of today and how it impacts their thoughts when it comes to their own self worth and body image.
As you know I am all for being happy and confident no matter how you look and I think  that perhaps if we did have more toys of different colours and sizes there may not be such a rigid ideal set forward as to what constitutes as beautiful. After all don’t we all have different tastes when it comes to beauty?
I would imagine that trying to promote a healthy body image for a toy company might be a tough thing for them to achieve. The Barbie doll is distributed worldwide and each country has different statistics for their average dress size. I think that either way the focus should always be on health and fitness. I guess what alarms me is that something I always considered a simple toy comes with a lot of extra baggage related to image and beauty.
I would be interested to hear what you think about the subject so please drop me a message or comment below.
