Guess what? It’s the time of year when we have lots to celebrate. Friends come together, Christmas and New Years is just around the corner and, with that comes a lot of fab fashion! I love the end of year party season. There are so many amazing places to go, things to see and activities to partake in. This year I’ve decided to do my thing with simple one piece items. Gorgeous dresses, amazing coats, that kind of thing.

Boohoo have some really good looks and all at affordable prices! I had a look at the Plus Size Curve collection and was pleasantly surprised with what was there. Lush velvet, sparkly sequins, bright prints and much more. The dress to catch my eye was the amazing black and white block twist front midi dress. When you think of black and white monochromatic looks with a stark contrast, Cruella Deville may spring to mind lol. I thought that this dress would make a fantastic staple and be an easy dress to style when you’re rushing out of the door to go somewhere amazing.

I really love the fact that although the dress has a plunging neckline it still remains modest for a large busted woman like myself. You can’t go wrong with a black or white number so having both tones to work with is even more fun. I decided to add a little glitz to the look by adding silver accessories. I love a little shine and so my chrome stiletto heels were a must, and my glitter clutch bag. Instead of my usual hoop earrings I selected this pair of statement diamante cross earrings. What with Christmas coming up it seemed like a nice touch of sparkle and a stylish way to showcase my faith.

There are so many fun ways that this dress can be worn. The next time I wear this one I may add some bright and bold colours with shoes, makeup or accessories. A fun jacket or shawl would be a nice addition to the look too.

Time To Get Active

Plus Size Woman Wearing Lane Bryant Livi Active Workout Clothes

Exercise and fitness, two very important elements of life that are discussed all over the world. I’ve never been one to enjoy working out but it’s something I do to try and stay on track and look after myself. Several months ago I began a journey to health and fitness that has been difficult, emotional and challenging. Being able to work out comfortably in great active wear is a huge help. Whatever you can do that works for you is a start.

Lane Bryant have always been my favourite place to go for workout clothes and I’ll explain why. Working out as a plus size woman has never been fun. I find that a lot of the time people look at you with disapproving looks and judgement. The world is screaming at us to be fitter and healthier but it judges us when we try to. Lane Bryant make working out a little bit easier for me. Being able to wear fitness clothes that are stylish, comfortable, hold and control some of the wobbly bits makes everything easier. The Livi active range has something for everyone. You may want something a little subtle in style or you may be looking for something bright and colourful.

Strong and beautiful is a statement many people would like to apply to themselves. When I exercise I think about building my strength which in and of itself is a beautiful thing. You can see why I had to get my hands on this baby pink sweater.  On those colder days when you want to go for a long walk or something this is a nice one to wear. The fabric is really soft also.

These angled-mesh inset leggings are amazing. Available in both burgundy and black with a nice style. They are high waisted with a thick elasticated band that moulds and holds you firm. A great pair to wear if you work out in the gym, do classes, go on walks or even enjoy running. I can assure you that you’ll enjoy them if you’re considering a new pair. The mesh insets also help to aerate the skin when you get sweaty.

When I began work with a personal trainer my aim was to get stronger and tighten up my body a little whilst I lose some of the additional weight I had gained. Due to some of the gynaecological and hormonal situations I have, I may always be a bigger woman. However, I don’t feel that that’s reason enough to not be as healthy as possible.

I know I still have my challenges ahead of me but I’m sure I’ll find it easier in time.

There’s nothing worse than when you feel something is wrong with you and nobody believes you. Feminine health is a hot topic of discussion these days but in my case I have struggled for years trying to get to the bottom of what has been going on with my body. Let me take you back to the beginning. I’m about to get a little personal so grab a cuppa, sit back and let me explain…

I first started having my period when I was just 12 years old. Of course I had read about what to expect in educational books, teen magazines and had chats with my mum. Technically I was what you could call “prepared” but the reality of my situation has been very very different. I began getting severe dizzy spells where I would literally lose control of my legs beneath me and either hit the deck or need to sit before this would happen. I eventually learned that the change in my blood sugars was making me faint and so chocolate was not only an aid for the cravings I would experience but, a bit of a God send in preventing dizzy spells.

Additional hair growth began to happen in places that were undesirable such as my chin, stomach etc. I could never manage the oily t-zone in my face and I was generally miserable. As if this wasn’t enough I experienced pains like no one I had ever met! There wasn’t a single woman in my family who could relate and more often than not the only thing I could do was lay in a ball, scream and cry in pain. It doesn’t help that I’m allergic to most pain medications…

After many years of discomfort, emotional distress and frustration I discovered what was wrong. It took suffering from a stomach illness to find out. After countless tests, examinations and visits to the doctor had me rather exhausted with the whole thing. I made the point of saying to my GP ‘you see me so often, can we please look into this?’. I explained all the symptoms I had been suffering with. Doctors had fobbed me off for years saying that things would balance out with age. In my case the older I got the worse things were. I was 29 and being sent for a vaginal ultra sound. When the results came back everything began to make sense.

Unfortunately I was dealing with 2 conditions, Adenomyosis (a condition in which the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). This was the first diagnosis and explained all the pain I had been experiencing over the years. The second was PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). This explained why I had been dealing with all of the other problems associated with having my period and why I never could find an answer.

Finding out what was wrong with my body not only gave me some answers but left me with a multitude of questions. A doctor even said to me ‘now we know why you’re so fat, especially as a vegetarian!’. I was left with a sense of relief to finally understand what I was dealing with. The experience also saddened me; for years I had to struggle and get by on my own.

So now I had several things to consider. A scary operation was needed where polyps were to be cut out of my uterus (caused by the adenomyosis). And as far as the PCOS was concerned I just had to deal with it. A Mirena coil was fitted to help me manage the pain and discomfort but that has presented problems of its own…

I’ve not been given much in the way of treatment if i’m completely honest with you. The main concern for the medics was if I want to have children one day and what challenges I may face in that area.

Plus Size Woman Looking Into The Distance

The whole situation has made me look into things in more detail. I’ve been considering what things I can eat to help regulate my hormones and deal with the pains and discomfort I experience. The additional body hair does make me self conscious and it’s something that I don’t like having to deal with. If I get lucky enough in the finance department of life I’d love to get laser hair removal in places. Some friends and acquaintances have PCOS and I have been comforted by hearing similar stories and taking tips and tricks on how to manage the symptoms. This is all really new to me and so I’m interested in hearing what others do to help them. I did take acupuncture for a few months also. After getting little to no help from the GP I wanted to see what I could do myself.

I come to find that although many people have PCOS not many people talk about it. Possible cysts on the ovaries and problems having children is pretty much all you hear about it. All of the other symptoms that come along with this seem to be insignificant when people speak on it. I can assure you as someone with this issue it’s not insignificant to live with them!

It can be emotionally traumatic and draining to have things happening to your body that you can’t control. Every now and then it does get me down emotionally and I just have to remind myself that many other women have these issues too, even if I don’t know them. I am currently in the process of looking for charities who deal with these conditions. I feel that being around women with the same issues as me could be a great support. Nature’s best have some supplements that look really interesting so I’ll definitely look into those. Anything I can take to help would be a great help.
I began working with a personal trainer recently to help keep my weight under control and I’m on a strict eating plan, making sure I get in all the nutrients I need as well as vitamins to help support my body and mind.

One piece of advice I would give to any woman who thinks she has PCOS, make sure your doctor gets a diagnosis! Don’t suffer like I did for years not knowing what’s wrong. The sooner you know the sooner you can find things to help you in your day to day life. It can get you down at times though. The internet can be an amazing place to connect with many other women in the same boat. So do reach out you’ll be so pleased that you did!

Designer Plus

Plus size woman wearing designer brands Lauren Ralph Lauren Jeans, a Levis t-shirt and Adidas trainers and a grey bandana

As a plus size woman there has always been things I’ve wanted to wear but haven’t been able to. The majority of items have come from designer brands. When it comes to the big name, high fashion companies most people think of the high fashion offerings, there has also been a wide range of casual items such as t-shirts, jeans, joggers and even nightwear. When Navabi got in touch with me recently and asked if I would like to select some items, the designer brands to catch my eye had some fab choices.

Levis was one of the first to expand their range and provide plus size options a while back. The jeans are of course their most sought after items but they have some really nice t-shirts and sweaters. When I saw this grey tee with classic red logo I really wanted to try it. You can’t go wrong with something like this as it works with so many items in the wardrobe. An easy item to dress up or down and with a really light and soft fabric. I’m really glad I chose this one.

There isn’t a person around who doesn’t like a good pair jeans. We all like a pair that hugs our curves in the right way, is comfortable, stylish and would work with many items. Ralph Lauren now have plus range, Lauren Ralph Lauren and these Coral-orange jeans are a fantastic pair to own. I have never had a pair of jeans with such a soft-to-the-touch fabric! You can feel that these are fantastic quality the minute you slip them on. They are thick without being rough and would work across any season. A great colour that can compliment any look and would also work dressed up or down.

The thing is, it’s really great to be able to choose some high quality items from huge brand names such as these. For years I wouldn’t even look at the look books for designers because the only items I could consider where the accessories. The novelty of being able to wear some great items like my smaller sisters can is a really nice feeling.

I’ve mentioned many times on this blog that when you are watching your budget you want to pick out items that can be worn with other things in the closet. Everyone needs some cute t-shirts and we all need a good pair of jeans. Check out both of these ranges over at Navabi to see what might work for you. They’ll be some great choices for you.
